Bionics Institute Award for Excellence in Medical Device Innovation

The Bionics Institute award for excellence in medical device innovation acknowledges an individual who, through their innovation and/or inventiveness, has made a significant contribution to the development of a medical device, particularly one which has been successfully commercialised.

We understand that some of the most important contributions to innovative technologies happen behind the scenes. As such, we strongly encourage nominations for individuals who have made a significant contribution, but in a lesser known capacity, i.e., ‘quiet achievers’.

The successful candidate will be awarded $5000 in prize money and subsequent media attention including a 90 second video to be shown on the evening of the Graeme Clark Oration (22nd July 2019).

Nominations open February 13th 2019 and close 5pm AEST on April 30th 2019.

Eligibility:

  • Nominations will be accepted for individuals only, not teams.
  • Self-nominations are not eligible.
  • Nominees must reside in Australia.
  • The device or technology was developed primarily in Australia and currently being used in clinical practice or a clinical trial.

Conditions of the award:

  • The awardee must be willing and able to attend the Graeme Clark Oration in Melbourne on the 22nd July 2019. The award will be presented at the dinner immediately following the oration.
  • The awardee agrees to participate in any media activities during the weeks before and after the Graeme Clark Oration. The awardee must be available in June 2019 to feature in a video production piece about themselves and their innovation.

Nomination requirements:

The nominator must complete the online nomination form and upload the following documents:

  1. Nomination Letter including a description of the nominee’s medical device innovation and its impact on the industry in Australia and/or the health of Australians. Letter is to be written by the nominator on their institutional letterhead (1000 word limit for main text).
  2. Nominee’s CV (4 page limit; including their top five achievements related to the innovation).
  3. Independent referee statement outlining support for the nomination. Referee must not be from the same institution or a recent collaborator. Letter is to be written by referee on their institutional letterhead (1000 word limit for main text).

Entries with insufficient information will not be considered.

Entries received after the closing date will not be considered.

Selection process:

  • Nominations will be judged by an Award selection committee, which includes the Bionics Institute CEO and independent third parties, based on the submitted material.
  • The nominator and referee may be contacted during the selection process for clarification or further information.
  • Nomination material will not be returned.
  • The decisions of the selection committee in the selection of the Award recipient are final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  • Composition of the selection committee will be disclosed upon request after the Award has been made.
  • The winner will be notified under embargo on June 1st. All other applicants will be informed by June 15th 2019. No feedback will be given for unsuccessful applications.
