Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) placements

UROP is a scheme designed to give undergraduate students an early opportunity to experience life in a research laboratory and gain insight into careers in biomedical research. The Bionics Institute participates in this program by providing placements for students. The program is managed by the Bio21 Cluster.

Prospective Honours Students

A range of studies are offered primarily through the University of Melbourne's Department of Otolaryngology.

Prospective PhD Students

The majority of PhD students commence their projects in the period from January to March.

Students interested in a PhD program at the Bionics Institute are requested to consider the type of project they would like to undertake (see table of projects) and make contact with the Student Coordinator in the first instance.
 
Selection of PhD students is competitive and is made using a combination of academic record, research experience and interests, and ability to obtain scholarship funding.

Students undertaking their studies at the Bionics Institute are enrolled through an approved Australian University. Currently, PhD students undertaking their studies at the Bionics Institute are either enrolled at The University of Melbourne or Latrobe University.

From 2013, students commencing at The University of Melbourne can apply to undertake their PhD candidature at the Bionics Institute through the Department of Medical Bionics.

Prospective students must take the following steps:

Application process:

  1. Expressions of interest should be made by first contacting the Student Coordinator.
  2. The Student Coordinator will direct you to a suitable supervisor and project based on an initial assessment of your interests and academic background.
  3. Expressions of interest are then assessed by the postgraduate student committee in consultation with the proposed supervisor.
  4. The student is informed whether they have been accepted, on the condition that the student is accepted by the enrolling university and that the student has obtained a scholarship.
  5. The student will go through enrolment procedures per university guidelines and will be required to consult with supervisors in this process.
