More of the story

We are harnessing our experience in biocompatibility, safety and engineering from our bionic hearing work for the benefit of people with degenerative eye diseases.

Working with the Bionic Vision Australia team, our challenge is to make the bionic eye as safe and effective as possible.

There are currently two devices in development;

  • wide view device - to distinguish light from dark and manoeuvre around large objects

  • a high-acuity device - patients may be able to recognise faces and read large print

The Australian National University and the University of Western Sydney are project partners.

The first patient trials of the device are planned to take place at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital.

This research is supported by the Australian Research Council (ARC) through its Special Research Initiative (SRI) in Bionic Vision Science and Technology grant to Bionic Vision Australia (BVA).
