Diabetes is a chronic, progressive condition and the majority of diabetic patients suffer from the type 2 form of the disease.

Current treatments for type 2 diabetes include lifestyle changes, medication and insulin injections. Over time many people fail to achieve adequate glucose control.

Building upon our prior knowledge of vagal nerve stimulation, results from a small pre-clinical study at the Bionics Institute have shown that applying different electrical stimulation strategies to the abdominal vagus nerve can effect changes in blood glucose levels and pancreatic hormone output.

This is a very exciting first step for our research team, and the aim over the next 1-2 years is to establish the safety and efficacy of this procedure, and in so doing, support the launch of a pilot clinical trial with diabetic patients. Click here to read more about our research into diabetes.
