The Bionics Institute is an internationally recognised, independent medical research institute, that solves medical challenges with technology. A multidisciplinary team of world leading scientists, engineers and clinicians, we lead the world in the research and development of innovative medical devices and therapies that improve human health.

Neo-Bionica, a joint initiative of the Bionics Institute and The University of Melbourne, is a new state-of-the-art medical device prototype manufacturing facility located in St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne. It provides medical device prototyping services to companies, clinicians and researchers from early ideation through to clinical testing.

Together we transform the lives of people across a range of conditions, including hearing impairment, vision loss, Crohn’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, stroke and diabetes.

Position Summary

We’re seeking a Marketing & Communications Coordinator to play a key role in increasing brand awareness and engagement with key target markets by providing content production, digital marketing and event coordination to support marketing of the Bionics Institute and its subsidiary company, Neo-Bionica.

As well as excellent writing skills and content production skills, the role requires a flair for organisation, great teamwork skills and the ability to pay close attention to detail.

Reporting directly to the Bionics Institute Marketing & Communications Manager and indirectly to the CEO of Neo-Bionica, the individual should be willing to undertake professional development and grow their role as the organisations grow.


Key Responsibilities



Content production

·Write copy and prepare graphics, images and video for email communications, the website and social media.

·Coordinate and assist with the production of printed and online collateral, including publications and signage.

·Update and ensure accuracy of website content.

Digital marketing coordination

·Maintain an accurate database of customers and stakeholders.

·Maintain communications with stakeholders and customers through production and distribution of regular email updates.

·Coordinate and report on paid media campaigns via Google Analytics and social media.

Event and media relations coordination

·Assist with media relations and media ops.

·Coordinate stakeholder and customer meetings and events, both in person and online.

·Coordinate lab tours, photo and video shoots.

Reporting and administration

·Prepare monthly marketing metrics report for Neo-Bionica.

·Arrange staff attendance at trade shows and conferences.

·Prepare customer and conference PowerPoint presentations.

·Assist with correspondence to supporters, customers, journalists and suppliers.

·Maintain an easy access library of photos, videos and graphics, ensuring media consent forms are completed and filed.

·Process supplier invoices.

Level of supervision and independence

The incumbent is expected to carry out a range of tasks that require excellent administrative and planning skills. The individual is expected to show significant initiative and work with a good level of independence. The position has no direct reports.


Problem solving and judgement

The incumbent is responsible for reviewing and developing their role and is expected to have the ability to research and recommend effective solutions to problems as and when required.


Interpersonal and organisational skills

The incumbent must be a confident individual with highly developed interpersonal and communications skills, and the ability to build strong relationships. The incumbent requires a high degree of organisational skills with excellent attention to detail and the ability to work without close supervision.


Essential selection criteria

Qualifications and experience

·Undergraduate degree in marketing, communications or journalism, or significant relevant work experience.

·Demonstrated experience in writing for traditional and digital media, including website and social media content.

·Experience or the ability to learn how to use a customer relationship management system (e.g., Salesforce); automated marketing platforms (e.g., MailChimp, or Pardot); update websites using a content management system (e.g. WordPress).

·Proficiency in Office 365, Excel and PowerPoint.

Content production skills

·Excellent written communication, proofreading skills and attention to detail, including ability to communicate complex information in simple language.

·Experience working with designers, videographers or photographers to produce traditional printed and digital content.

·Competence in the use of Canva to produce simple graphics for social media and the website.

Project management skills

·Ability to organise and implement all facets of a project with minimal supervision from direct and/or indirect manager.

·Ability to problem solve and take the initiative to achieve project goals.

Interpersonal skills

·Works well in a team and able to communicate effectively with colleagues.

·Ability to communicate effectively and build relationships with high level stakeholders, customers and suppliers to facilitate outcomes.

Time management

·Efficiently scopes out, prioritises and follows through tasks that are necessary to get the job done on time.

·Shifts priorities as needed and strives to deliver outcomes in a timely manner.

 Desired Selection Criteria

  • Event organisation experience, either in person or online.
  • Premiere Pro video editing experience
  • Experience in writing for search engine optimisation.
  • Media relations experience or training.
  • Experience in coordinating Google Ad Words and paid social media campaigns.
  • Experience using Google Analytics, media monitoring platforms or social media scheduling tools.
  • Experience in B2C and/or B2B communications.

This is a Full Time 6 months position with possibility to extend.
