The annual Bionics Institute Award for Excellence in Medical Device Innovation recognises an Australian who, through innovation, has made a significant impact on the medical device ecosystem with the aim of improving human health.

If you know an extraordinary innovator, we invite you to nominate them for this prestigious award. 

The award winner will be announced at the Bionics Institute 2022 Graeme Clark Oration Dinner in Melbourne on 12 July 2022, and will receive a $5000 prize and associated publicity.

2019: Mr Peter Single

Peter has made an outstanding contribution to the development of the Australian medical device start up sector, and is a leading figure in the areas of micro-chip development and manufacture, cochlear implants and speech processors. Over the past 10 years he has played a key role in the development of a world first neuromodulation device which aims to revolutionise the treatment of chronic pain.

2018: Prof Peter Seligman

Recognised for his significant contribution to the development of Cochlear Implants, Peter's innovations include developing speech processor miniaturisation and portability, and the development of custom chips to implement new speech processing strategies. These inventions and innovations have enabled cochlear implants to become even more effective and also to be available to a wider number of people. This award also reflects the significant input and mentorship he has provided to the Australian medical device development community. Peter has worked in the field for over 30 years and continues to be involved in the Bionics Institute’s development of medical devices to assist in the management of epilepsy, to improve vision and to treat gut inflammation.
