Dr Gautam Balasubramanian, Neural Algorithms Lead

Dr Gautam Balasubramanian completed a Bachelor of Engineering (Computer-Systems) in University of Technology Sydney 2003 and a Masters of Electrical Engineering (Electrical and Computer Science, Coursework) in 2006 at Monash University.

He undertook his doctoral research in conjunction with DST (Defence Science Technology) & University of Adelaide, in applications of convex optimisation and Bayesian modelling to infer appropriate spectral bands in finding military targets using hyperspectral sensors.

In 2014, he received his PhD winning the Dean’s commendation for best thesis. Gautam’s main interests include non-parametric Bayesian methods and solving real-world problems using practical statistical models.

Previously, Gautam has worked in a range of industries. Starting off his career at Cochlear Ltd in Lane Cove, Sydney.

Between 2003 & 2004, he completed his undergraduate thesis whilst doing an internship developing a clinical assistant: an expert system to train audiologists to stimulate electrodes at the correct electrode levels.

Having developed a love for the impact of signal processing and machine learning, he completed a coursework Masters at Monash and secured a role as an algorithms engineer at DST.

Working in hyperspectral military target between 2007 & 2010, Gautam identified improvements to the existing pipeline to find military targets and this subsequently became the catalyst for a fully funded PhD.

With the intention of applying tools & techniques gained from the PhD over between 2014-2020, as a data scientist Gautam applied his craft at a hedge fund for 2 years designing trading algorithms, solving portfolio allocation problems and analysing risk in US equity trading.

The remaining 4 years was spent at Telstra and Telstra subsidiary Belong, working with specialists designing and implementing solutions in network fault prediction, bad network cable identification, network outage detection and bandwidth allocation problems.

Some of these models are still in production today.

Joining the Bionics Institute in 2021, Gautam is a Senior Data Scientist responsible for algorithm development of speech detection and discrimination modules of the EarGenie™ medical device, an innovative system for detecting hearing impairment in infants.

Preliminary experiments of one such algorithm that he developed has shown promising results and has resulted in the filing of a provisional patent.

Furthermore, his responsibilities at the Bionics Institute include the upliftment of the analytics capacity in the institute promoting a higher standard of work and leveraging of the latest commercial tools in research.
