Our Impact
At the forefront of translating medical device concepts into clinical reality since the cochlear implant
We have an impressive track record of translating research into clinical reality through commercialisation
Commercialisation is vital for the translation of medical research because the process brings new products to market – a necessary step to ensure patients benefit from innovation.
Highlights of our impact through commercialisation includes:
EpiMinder: Redefining epilepsy monitoring through the Minder device, first developed at the Bionics Institute, which provides FDA-authorised implantable continuous monitoring of brain activity to empower the management of drug-resistant epilepsy.
Neo-Bionica: Providing specialised engineering support to neurotechnology innovators to develop implants from concept to clinical trials.
EarGenie: Bringing clarity to paediatric audiology using an innovative diagnostic device to guide programming of hearing aids and cochlear implants.
Once our researchers have developed a device, establishment of a spin-off company staffed with experts in regulation, investment and marketing is a necessary step to ensure our innovation reaches patients in the clinic.
Our translation pipeline
The Bionics Institute also has a number of research projects in the pipeline towards commercialisation:
Software as a medical device to speed up personalisation of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for the treatment of depression and Alzheimer’s disease.
Vagus nerve stimulation implant to provide a non-drug treatment for inflammatory conditions such as Crohn’s disease and neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease.
Revolutionary nanotechnology to restore hearing using therapeutics.
An objective measure of tinnitus to improve diagnosis and treatments.
Our funding model
Our impact is underpinned by our funding model that allows for different income streams at each stage of the product lifec-cycle.
Tax deductible donations are vital to fund early-stage, conceptual research and initial research trials.
Impact investment and equity investment enables us to turn ground-breaking research into clinical reality.
Impact investment opportunties
We have a number of impact investment opportunities available to take our pipeline projects to the next stage of commercialisation.
