Dr Alex Thompson leads our Engineering Capability, a critical unit with 6 engineers who provide engineering and product development expertise to help advance research ideas into products that help patients.
He has over 15 years of experience in various biomedical engineering specialities, including neuromodulation, biomedical device development, data analysis, advanced optical neural stimulation and modelling. His work has resulted in over 25 publications and attracted $4.1M in funding.
Alex obtained his PhD at Swinburne University (2010 – 2013), then moved to the University of St Andrew (2014-2016) as a Research Fellow before joining the Bionics Institute in 2017.
